I’m pregnant and I want to exercise!

  • What do I need to know?

Gone are the days of the “fragile” mom.  Current research reveals that it is perfectly safe for mom to exercise as long as she has a normal healthy pregnancy. First, here are some guidelines to help you get started.

    1. Caloric needs = 300 additional calories a day plus the amount expended during exercise (after 1st trimester).
    2. Hydration.  Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.
    3. Pre-exercise snack or meal should consist of a complex carbohydrate and protein mix,  eaten 1-2 hours before activity.
    4. Eat a small snack after exercising.
    5. Dress in layers that can easily be removed.
  • Can I just start coming to classes whenever I want?

Every pregnant mom needs to attend the one hour Prenatal Orientation before attending her first class.  This is a time to meet personally with owner Julie Summers, turn in the signed physician/caregiver’s release form and get pertinent information about exercise during pregnancy.  If you are not able to attend the scheduled class, contact Julie Summers for a one-on-one appointment.  This class is free and meets at noon on Saturdays.  Register ahead as you would for a regular class.

Your care provider may have his/her own release form or you can print this one.

Common Questions about Exercise and Pregnancy

  • I am considered “high risk”.  Can I still attend classes?

We leave that decision up to you and your physician/care giver.  Pregnant moms and postpartum moms returning to exercise before her 6-week postpartum visit – need to have a physicians release form before attending any classes.  Your care provider may have his/her own release form or you can print this one.

  • Can a mom become overheated and harm the development of the baby?

Dr. James Clapp’s research has shown that in early pregnancy, women are approximately 30% more efficient at dealing with heat stress and at lease 70% more efficient during late pregnancy. This research suggests the risk is very low that exercise will cause harm to the fetus.  Increased blood flow throughout mom’s body is an efficient system for cooling her body. The synovial fluid around the baby is also an efficient insulator for baby.

Even so, it is recommended mom’s drink plenty of water, wear cool clothing and not exercise in very hot or humid conditions.

  • I’ve heard that if I exercise, there will be a decreased blood flow to the uterus.  Is this true?

Have no fear.  Research has found that the hearts of active pregnant women pump more blood per beat and utilized a greater percentage of available oxygen.  This can balance any drop of blood flow to the uterus.  We also know that even if the uterine blood flow is decreased, the blood flow to the placental side remains relatively constant.  Remember, only moderate activity is recommended.

  • I don’t believe that I need permission from a care provider to exercise.  Can I come to class without a signed physician/caregiver’s release form?

Our top priority is to provide a safe place for pregnant women and new mothers to exercise.  While we advocate strongly for a woman’s right to make informed health choices on her own, our liability insurance requires that we retain a signed release from a care provider for prenatal clients and postpartum clients within 6 weeks of childbirth.  Non-pregnant women and women wishing to attend class more than 6 weeks after childbirth are welcome without a care provider’s release. Receiving prenatal care at the Midwife’s Place? • How do I know if AbMend is right for me?

Women are at increased risk of diastasis if they are mothers of multiples, over 35 years of age, have had repeated pregnancies or have to do a lot of heavy lifting.  Many athletic women are at risk as well. Obesity and poor abdominal tone can also increase the risk. If you are unsure whether or not you have a diastasis ask your doctor or contact us at info@MommyFitnessOmaha.com and we can set up a consultation to do a check.  This takes only a couple of minutes and can be done before or after a regular class.  Learn more about this program here.

  • What makes AbMend different from the other diastasis rehab programs I can find online?

AbMend was created by Julie Summers specifically for Mommy Fitness.  While most programs provide daily exercise and general guidelines, you will get a lot more from AbMend.  The variety of daily exercises, supportive atmosphere and practical fitness modifications make this program totally unique.  You’ll also learn how to move during your daily activities in a way that encourages recovery & prevents further injury.  Learn more here.
